Starz has set Catherine de Medici’s (Samantha Morton) royal court. Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones), Enzo Cilenti (Free Fire), Barry Atsma (The Hitman’s Bodyguard), Nicholas Burns (Emma) and Danny Kirrane (Pirates of the Caribbean) join Morton as series regulars in The Serpent Queen original series, from Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), Ludivine Sagnier (8 Women), Liv Hill (Three Girls), Kiruna Stamell (The New Pope) and Colm Meaney (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) have been cast in recurring roles in the 16th Century drama.

Considered an immigrant, common and plain, Morton’s Catherine de Medici is married into the 16th century French court as an orphaned teenager expected to bring a fortune in dowry and produce many heirs, only to discover that her husband is in love with an older woman, her dowry is unpaid and she’s unable to conceive. Yet, only with her intelligence and determination, she manages to keep her marriage alive and masters the bloodsport that is the monarchy better than anyone else, ruling France for 50 years.

Acharia plays Aabis. A member of Catherine’s retinue… Aabis is Muslim, a Moor by birth, but procured and converted by Pope Clement to Christianity after war with Suleiman the Ottoman Emperor. Everything that Catherine is not, with a beauty that regularly invokes the desire of powerful men, she is at first grateful to be rescued by Catherine from the predation of Pope Clement. Once in the Valois court, however, Aabis earns Catherine’s envy and realizes too late she may have entered into a Faustian bargain of her own.

Cilenti is Ruggieri. When Catherine meets the magician and soothsayer, he is peddling his talents on the streets of Florence, alongside peasants and grifters. She invites him to join her retinue with no thoughts to the man’s own agenda or crimes. After he joins her in the French court by becoming her personal guide to the black arts, he changes his life and hers, forever.

Atsma is Montmorency. In a royal court where nobody thinks of anything but their own survival and status, Montmorency has the dubious distinction of actually caring about the greater good of the society he serves as its foremost military leader. Concepts like fairness, equality and justice mean something to this man. Consequently, he is almost always a step behind the other members of court, who find him either a bore or a hindrance to their scheming. When Montmorency converts to Protestantism it is that rare thing: genuine. Montmorency’s goodness and wisdom finally win him the trust and faith of King Charles IX, Catherine’s second son. Unfortunately, his guidance of the young monarch puts him directly in Catherine’s cross hairs – provoking her rage, hatred and ultimately, deadly vengeance

Burns portrays Antoine de Bourbon. The eldest of the Bourbon brothers, Antoine, was married to Jeanne D’Albret, the daughter of Marguerite, Queen of Navarre and King Francis’s sister. In this way his father hopes the Bourbons will move closer to the Valois. But Antoine is lazy and a sensualist, much more motivated by his own comforts and titillations than any power plays.

Kirrane is Louis de Bourbon, the stronger willed and more intelligent Bourbon brother. He is not as easy for the Valois to manipulate and ridiculebut he is not as intelligent as he thinks himself to be.

Dance recurs as Pope Clement; Sagnier as Diane; Hill as Young Catherine; Stamell as Mathilde and Meaney as “King Francis.

The Serpent Queen will air on Starz in the U.S. and Canada and on its international premium streaming platform Starzplay across its complete footprint in Europe, Latin America, and Japan.

Starz is delving far into the past once again for its latest project.

Fresh off the success of “The Spanish Princess,” the network is developing another historical drama based around the life of Eleanor of Aquitaine. The project is one of multiple series Starz is working on in conjunction with Lionsgate TV and Colin Callender’s Playground banner as part of what the network is calling its “extraordinary women of history” slate.

The Eleanor of Aquitaine show is based on Alison Weir’s biography “Eleanor of Aquitaine: A Life” and its companion novel “Captive Queen.” Starz has acquired the rights to both, and intends to announce additional properties in its aforementioned slate in due time.
This slate of series will focus on lesser known, but undeniably exceptional female historical figures while continuing the exploration of fierce characters in history,” said Christina Davis, president of programming for Starz. “Alison Weir’s novels are the perfect jumping off point for this collection of series from Playground, who are known for their sophisticated storytelling.”

Eleanor of Aquitaine, born in the 12th century, was Queen consort of England and France and wife to King Henry II of England, whom she famously betrayed. The series will depict Eleanor’s unwavering spirit which saw her through many years of victories and defeats – a marriage bound by duty, a passionate love affair, family alliances and betrayals, the grandeur of power and the desolation of imprisonment.

Susie Conklin, whose previous credits include “A Discovery of Witches” and “Cranford,” will pen the Eleanor adaptation and serve as executive producer. Scott Huff and David Stern will oversee development for Playground and serve also exec produce the series.

“We’re excited to partner with Starz and Lionsgate to bring Alison Weir’s acclaimed biography and novel of Eleanor of Aquitaine to television,” said Huff and Stern in a joint statement. “Eleanor presided over a magnificent, progressive court filled with scandal and intrigue, and we’re thrilled with Susie’s bold and provocative take on this fascinating story.”

“I’m thrilled at the opportunity to bring Eleanor’s story to life – the drama and adventures she experienced are truly epic. I’m also captivated at how a woman who lived over 800 years ago can be so strikingly modern. She’s determined to live her life on her own terms, and the way she goes about that are extraordinary,” added Conklin.

Senior vice president of original programming Karen Bailey is the Starz executive overseeing the show, while Lionsgate Television SVP Jocelyn Sabo is in charge on behalf of the studio.

Some good news for fans of Netflix's The Crown.

Season 4 has completed filming despite production running into the coronavirus pandemic, EW has confirmed.

While many shows have been forced to shut down in recent weeks, the U.K.-based production was near the end of shooting its upcoming season when the outbreak started shutting down shows. The production jammed to finish up and has wrapped a few days early. So the new season will likely air later this year with Olivia Colman reprising her role as Queen Elizabeth II.
