Instead, Peter Morgan plans to dig into Prince Philip—and, perhaps, his alleged affairs.
The Crown creator Peter Morgan is endlessly fascinated by Prince Philip. At a special Royal Television Society event titled “The Crown: Deconstructing the Coronation,” Morgan revealed that Season 2 of the critically acclaimed Netflix series would turn its attention away from Elizabeth II and toward the Prince’s “complexity.”
Prince Philip, played on the series by Doctor Who alum Matt Smith, is “a strong flavor,” Morgan said, per Elle. "I find him extraordinarily interesting—his childhood, again, you couldn’t make it up. The soul of Season 2 is about his complexity.”
When asked whether the season will play up any of Philip’s alleged affairs, though, Morgan stayed mum. “This is a spoiler-free chat! We're still in the cutting room and making all sorts of changes.”
“Doesn’t everyone in Britain know he had an affair?” he added, per Time Out London.
Rumors have abounded for years about Philip’s supposed infidelities with various women. Some biographers, such as Sarah Bradford, have dug into the rumors and even substantiated them: “The Duke of Edinburgh has had affairs . . . full-blown affairs and more than one,” Bradford wrote in her book Elizabeth II: Her Life in Our Times. “He has affairs and the queen accepts it. I think she thinks that’s how men are . . . He's never been one for chasing actresses. His interest is quite different. The women he goes for are always younger than him, usually beautiful, and highly aristocratic.”
In the book Philip & Elizabeth: Portrait of a Marriage, biographer Gyles Brandreth said Philip had only this to say about alleged dalliances: “How could I? I’ve had a detective in my company, night and day, since 1947.”
Season 1 of The Crown, which covered the years 1951 to 1955, did not fully explore these rumors—but it did paint a portrait of Philip as a flirtatious and blunt man. Though Morgan wouldn’t reveal any more details about what’s coming next for the show, he promised it would pick up exactly where the last season left off and would take stars Claire Foy (who plays Queen Elizabeth) and Smith “to the outer edge of where we can take them, with their ages.
“If we took it any further we would have to think about recasting," he said. “There is no commitment of it going further at the moment, we're just focusing on this season up until 1964.” |
