Show writer Peter Morgan has revealed he is struggling to find an actor to fill Matt’s shoes because the calibre of star is just too big to get in for an audition.

He said: “You can’t ask them to come and read. You can’t do that.

“These are all people who have been working for some time now with big careers.

He said: “I can tell you that the third series starts in 1964 and that it ends in 1976.

“I’ve written some of the episodes and I’m in the process of wanting to shoot myself.”

The Crown has found its new Prince Philip, Netflix confirmed to Vanity Fair on Wednesday.

Tobias Menzies, best known for playing Edmure Tully on Game of Thrones and both Frank Randall and Black Jack Randall on Outlander, will pick up where Matt Smith left off, by playing the real-life royal in the show’s third and fourth seasons.

The Crown’s third season will pick up in the 1970s and introduce Camilla Parker Bowles, then Camilla Shand, who met Prince Charles at a polo match in 1971. While little else is known about The Crown’s new season, Nina Gold teased that Philip and Elizabeth’s eldest children, Charles and Anne, will have larger roles than they did in the initial seasons.

“Charles, Camilla, and Anne are going to be pretty interesting characters to follow, because they are just coming into their own,” said Gold. “We’ve cast a pretty wide net for these new young characters.”

Gillian Anderson to Play Margaret Thatcher in Season Four of ‘The Crown’

X-Files star Gillian Anderson is reportedly set to portray British prime Margaret Thatcher in the fourth season of the blockbuster Netflix series The Crown, The Sunday Times reports. Famously dubbed “The Iron Lady,” Thatcher served as Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990, becoming the U.K.’s longest-serving prime minister of the 20th century and the first ever woman to be prime minister. Meryl Streep won an Oscar for her portrayal of the polarizing leader, in 2011’s The Iron Lady. Anderson, who grew up in the United Kingdom and the United States, is known for playing realist FBI agent Dana Scully on the X-Files, working to prove “the truth is out there” since 1993. The actress will now be swapping her FBI badge for a handbag. Netflix has yet to confirm a release date for season three of The Crown.
